More than a mix-master, TomFoolery is a student of the scene and of the sound, a journeyman and a spiritual leader that takes crowds on musical rides of self-exploration and enlightenment. A pioneer of Nu-Skool with a propensity for the hard and dark beat, he rounds out his big-bass sound with fuzzy and funky layering. It would be unfair to label his work as simply “breaks,” though he has taken the core of that genre and built a sound that is turning heads. TomFoolery fuses influences from breaks, jungle, house, cutting-edge bassline, trance, dub and glitch, which affords him the luxury of playing late night parties, big rooms, small clubs and festivals large and small. People are paying attention, making TomFoolery a staple on the DJ circuit and kingpin of the Midwest.

Having been immersed in the jungle and breaks laden scene of the southeast in the mid nineties, TomFoolery descended on the Midwest in 2004, where he found himself cooking up his new sound with house and techno ingredients popular in the region. He can spin a dark and gritty set suited for the small venues, yet reach into a crate of records more suited for the big room club sensibility, a capability that affords all fans of electronic music the opportunity to run with his spiritual voyage. Having been misappropriated to jungle rooms early on by promoters may have been one of the best things to happen to TomFoolery, as the culmination is this new and evolving sound, where listeners are exposed to big basslines over funky beats.

Yet it’s not just the music that sets TomFoolery apart from the others, but his devotion to the scene and creating the purest of opportunity to experience his music and his contemporaries’ in the most enlightening of settings. As founder of CatalyticSouls, he and his crew continually host underground electronic and live music festivals in several Midwest states. The festivals include the likes of Cave Stock, CaveFest, UnderGround Sound and Gamma Fest, which featured the ever-popular Psy sets of Shpongle and Hallucinogen. And more are on the horizon. CatalyticSouls was formed with the notion of spreading its musical vision with the mission of “evolving consciousness.”

What’s more is that TomFoolery studied and wrote on the electronic and rave movement under the guided hand of Phylis Johnson and Todd Herreman as part of a master’s degree he completed at SIUC. His extensive studies of the power of healing, chakras, Kundalini and the meta-physical realm have enriched not only his own sensibility, but pushed him to include the fan and listener as part of a collective vision. This collective musical and spiritual mission is found not only in his live sets, but in the studio, where again a student, TomFoolery works heavily with classic analog equipment combinined with state of the art recording and editing techinques. Fans have fallen in love with the studio releases of “Mind Wrecker,” “Playa Dust,” and the DJ Fixx VIP mix of “Control.” The “Control” edit was atop the best-selling breakbeat charts on Beatport.com for months and the “Mind Wrecker” single has been played on TomFoolery’s MySpace page over 20,000 times. His name is constantly atop the breakbeat singles charts and his production credits for CatalyticSouls REC label are making him a leader on the scene. Recently, TomFoolery was commissioned to remix tracks for the legendary Communique’ Records. They said of TomFoolery: “Tom has established himself as one of America’s most reputable electronic and alternative music event promoters, music producers and deejays. It is always a pleasure to work with him. He understands good business and good music.”

So ranging is TomFoolery and his work, his collaboration credits include: Transformerman UK, DJ Fixx, K. Larm and J. Raninen. He has shared the bill with the likes of: Bassnectar, The Glitch Mob, Tommie Sunshine, Computer Club, Evol Intent, Shpongle, Kaskade, Phantom 45, Simon Apex, John B., Ferry Corsten, George Acosta, SkyLab 2000, Hallucinogen, and Infected Mushroom. From forests to beaches and from the smallest of venues to the airiest of night-clubs, fans will find TomFoolery spreading his musical message with every spin of the record. Last year alone, TomFoolery played in more than 20 cities spanning from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific Islands. Stay tuned and expect that this musical journey will be sending you a local invite very soon.

Olin is what I’ve been doing for nigh on 3 years, but always been hesitant to really do anything with. Thunderous Olympian is just fun and bullshit. Not that I’m not serious about it, but Olin is something that is so “close to my heart” right now— I need it to be perfect, which is not a tendency I usually have.

In any event, I’ve figured out pretty conclusively that I like to play for a really long time at a really obscene hour, and that’s kind of what this mix is about. (Again, I have to temper these generalizations, as I still really like to play peak hours sets, and will do them gleefully.) It’s something that’s relatively new to me, but kind of makes sense given that I’ve always been a sucker for melody and “feelings” in dance music. Whether people eventually want to trade me money for this “feeling imparting ability” remains a mystery.

Interview with Julie West

With a distinctive raw energy and comical flair, UK-based artist and illustrator Julie West examines how individuals live and characterize themselves in their environments. Since graduating with a BFA in Illustration in 1998 from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, she has acquired an impressive client list including Arista Records, Flow Snowboards, Jansport, LA Weekly, Mixmag, Nike, PC Magazine, Sun Microsystems, Wired Magazine, XM Satellite Radio, and several others. Her eccentric and witty artwork is a mixture of digital elements and traditional means such as acrylic, gouache, and technical pens. By focusing on the details, Julie’s work exposes those unique moments that make us human. Enjoy the interview after the jump.

Please describe your style for us, like a good friend of yours would describe it.
I think that most people who know me would remark on how much my style resembles my personality – if that is a thing that you can visualize. The way that I generally view the world is pretty much what I put down on paper. It’s all a bit silly and doesn’t necessarily make a whole lot of sense.

What is your favorite aspect of being an artist?
Well, to be completely honest, it’s the freedom of working for myself. I wouldn’t want any other job, even when it is difficult.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane: What were your early years in print and web design like?
Ha ha. My early years were mostly overworked, underpaid, and doing things that had nothing to do with my own personal feelings about creativity. I was very bitter and mostly hated it, save a good project here and there. I think that I definitely paid my dues – I worked in a factory and even in someone’s basement!

How would you describe your studio?
Right now, my studio is in two places and quite the big mess. I am currently in the process of moving out of my main studio space and into the loft of our house. Things are everywhere and it’s difficult to find anything. Though I must admit, I sort of have that problem even when it is all in one place! I have a LOT of things. The sorts of things that you tell yourself you might need or make something out of someday, and you never do. Those things make up most of what my studio consists of… and it travels around with me from space to space. I have a very limited number of things that I actually use when making art.

Are there any special tricks that you do in order to create an environment that simulates creativity?
Not really. I can pretty much draw anywhere, anytime. It’s more important that I get the ideas out when I get them or else I may completely forget!

If you could be anybody else, who would you be and why?
I’m not sure. I would probably be someone that has enough money to build a house. I can’t really think of anyone specific. It’s not that I think that I am perfect – far from it! I just don’t think anyone else is either. I am pretty content with who I am.

What has been your experience working with galleries and exhibit spaces? Do you have any favorites?
I love this aspect of my job because it’s the time I spend doing exactly what I want. Galleries and exhibit spaces are all usually really nice and fairly easy to work with. I can’t think of any bad experiences.

I would have a hard time picking a favorite in general. So far, I think that the show I had at MyPlasticHeart was great for a lot of reasons, including the time I spent on the work I had there. I am very proud of that show.

What would you do if you had a year off?
I would probably do what I am doing already. I struggle with being lazy. If I had more time, I would probably take more print-making classes. I’d also love to learn more about several things that I don’t have any actual time for: gardening, cooking, working on my lovely car, woodworking, animating, etc.

Are you working on any new exciting projects that you can talk about?
I have a couple things coming up, but not much that I can talk about. I am working on a few toys and some other fun things. I also have two new shows coming up – one at Plastic Chapel in August and another at Pink Ghost in October.

Strungover Sunday
Last night was… interesting.
Amy came to visit from Ann Arbor.

Last night was… interesting.

Amy came to visit from Ann Arbor.

Amy was a 5′9 blonde haired amazonian Sorostitute when I met her back in college.

She heavily rotated between U of M football players and Frat boys and studied beer pong for four years straight.

The summer before Grad School she went to visit family in Berlin and we’d lost touch… until two weeks ago. Amy hit me up via Twitter and asked what I was doing Saturday night in Chicago.

I told her that I’d attend some going away party with her.

It was not what I expected.

Not at all.

Amy asked that I meet her at Lava Lounge for her very good friend Angel Alanis’s going away party. She said he was spinning…

whoopty fucking doo!!!!

Random Evening Recap:

1. While Amy was sitting at the bar drinking bottled water but looking utterly WASTED I was fighting to get utterly wasted. Off of Patron shots.

2. I couldn’t find anyone else in the bar to do shots with me; evidently no one that listens to this “Angel” Character drinks anything but water.

3. No one calls her Amy. She is “Detroit Amy” and damn proud of it. WTF????

4. I said I had a head ache. Amy said she had the cure and gave me what I assumed was an advil.

5. All of a sudden I was having the TIME OF MY LIFE

6. I got in a car with Detroit Amy, Angel Alanis and a girl wearing a cowboy hat and stripper boots

7. I ended up dancing in a laundry room basement somewhere in Lincoln Park with a dude in a fur coat, leather pants and a zebra hat.

8. I woke up n my couch ten minutes ago with the words “Strap On Sweetie” written on my tits.

WTF?????

“We have just gotten a wake-up call from the Nintendo Generation.” - Cereal Killer from the movie, “Hackers.”

I am fascinated by the role that social technology and in particular, Twitter is playing in the new conflict in Iran. After thousands of Tweets on the subject Twitter has now moved their scheduled maintenance time to keep the service viable as a portal for suppressed news items out of Tehran. I’ve noticed lots of DJ’s, already immersed in the hive mind of the Twitterverse, joining the movement to share this information too.

Here are a few Tweets from Diplo, who has been particularly active on this topic. We’re so glad to see it and impressed to see so many producers and DJ’s we love embracing this trickle up channel for news. To our friends in Iran we stand behind you in your question for free and fair elections and media. STAND STRONG.
